4 Signs of Diabetes During Pregnancy - Signs of Gestational Diabetes

What are the signs of diabetes during pregnancy? Or what are the typical signs of gestational diabetes? It is a temporary phase of diabetes that effects the pregnant women.

According to American Diabetes Association around 21 million children and adults are suffering from diabetes alone in United States. This includes more than 9 million women. The worse news is that one third of this population does not know that they are suffering from this chronic ailment.

Almost 4% of all pregnant women are suffering from gestational diabetes. This diabetic condition can prove to be harmful for the unborn child. It normally starts in the 5th or 6th month of pregnancy. The diabetic stage fades away after the baby is born. It is believed that underlying cause of gestational diabetes is the thrush of hormones during pregnancy. These hormones decrease the ability of women towards insulin. This also adds to the high level of blood sugar.

These high blood sugar levels are neither good for the mother nor for the baby. It is important that all pregnant women must be screened for diabetes.

Following are the most common 4 signs of diabetes during pregnancy. The dilemma is that these signs are also connected with earliest symptoms of pregnancy.

Frequent Urination

It is the earliest symptom of pregnancy as the uterus puts pressure on bladder. It is the sign of gestational diabetes as excessive fluid is needed to expel the extra glucose from blood.

Increased Thirst

Increased thirst is the first sign of diabetes as well as the earliest pregnancy symptom. The reason is the excessive dehydration via urination.

Tiredness or Fatigue

Tiredness is a usual pregnancy symptom. Similar feelings are seen because of diabetes. One may feel run out or tired even from the routines work.

Vomiting or Nausea

No doubt it is the classic pregnancy symptom but normally it fades away after the first trimester. If it continues till third trimester then it could be the sign of diabetes.
Please note these could be either earliest pregnancy symptoms or signs of gestational diabetes. It is not easy to differentiate between the two. Still if any of the above signs are seen then you must;

1) Check Diabetes during Pregnancy.

2) Check Signs of Gestational Diabetes.

3) Plan a visit to doctor.
